International Youth Day 2026: Celebrating Young Innovators and Solutions for a Changing Zimbabwe
Young people took centre stage at the 2026 International Youth Day commemoration at Ruwa Innovation Hub, where young innovators, government representatives, development partners, private sector stakeholders and other youth focused organizations came together to celebrate youth creativity, innovation and contribution to Zimbabwe’s development.
The commemoration was the culmination of a 3 day programme. Rather than being a conventional commemorative event, the programme created a practical pathway for young people to strengthen their skills, refine innovations, develop prototypes, pitch solutions and connect with stakeholders and potential opportunities.
With the programme, 288 young people were reached, including 83 innovators, while 43 teams presented their solutions through the Innovation Challenge. A further 12 youth led innovations were showcased during the International Youth Day exhibition and stakeholder engagement activities.
The commemoration was graced by the Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training, Hon. Kudakwashe Mupanhanga, who delivered the keynote address. The Deputy Minister highlighted the important role young people are already playing in Zimbabwe through innovation, entrepreneurship and the development of solutions to challenges affecting their communities.
His address placed particular emphasis on the changing nature of work and the opportunities emerging from Artificial Intelligence, digital technologies, automation and the green economy. He underscored the importance of ensuring that young people have access to the skills, connectivity, confidence and support required to participate in these emerging opportunities.
The Deputy Minister also highlighted the need to strengthen pathways that enable youth innovations to move beyond prototypes towards commercialization, market access and sustainable enterprise development.
This message aligned closely with the purpose of the Innovation Challenge, which encouraged participants to think beyond what their prototypes could do and consider the users they serve, their business models, financial sustainability, market opportunities and potential for growth.
The pitching process gave innovators an opportunity to communicate their problem, solution, target users, innovative approach, technical feasibility and commercial potential. It also exposed them to the type of questioning and feedback they may encounter when engaging potential partners, investors, customers and other stakeholders.
The International Youth Day Innovation Challenge recognized five youth led innovations, with each team receiving USD 1,000 to support the continued development of their solutions.
1. CT Flex Chewe Technologies
Flexible insurance for informal workers
A micro-insurance platform offering flexible cover designed around the irregular incomes of informal workers.
2. MembraCool
Affordable, refrigerant-free cooling
A low-energy cooling system that uses water and a specialized membrane, offering an alternative to conventional refrigerant-based cooling.
3. Eco Titans Earth to Energy
Turning water hyacinth into renewable energy.
A biodigester solution designed to convert water hyacinth into renewable biogas for cooking and heating.
4. Chigubhu Connect
Turning plastic waste into opportunity
Solar-powered recycling kiosks that reward users for depositing plastic bottles while creating opportunities for waste pickers.
5. PULSE
Making skills visible
A Skills Passport platform that verifies young people's skills and connects them to work, learning and other opportunities.
Schneider Electric Energy Transition Challenge
The Schneider Electric Energy Transition Challenge supported youth-led innovations focused on energy transition and sustainability. Three teams were recognized through the challenge.
1. Lithium-X
A battery recycling solution designed to recover valuable materials such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel for reuse in battery production.
2. Lavish Bio Gas
A small-scale biogas solution that converts organic waste into clean energy while producing bio-slurry that can be used as fertilizer.
3. AI4I-EMS
An AI-powered system that analyses electricity data, forecasts demand and recommends actions to help institutions manage energy consumption more efficiently
The 2026 International Youth Day commemoration therefore provided more than a platform to celebrate young people. It created an opportunity to recognise their ideas, showcase their solutions and connect their innovations to the wider ecosystem of support needed to help them grow.
